In 1992 Larry Bird one of the greatest ever to play the game retired from the Celtics after helping the Celtics to 3 titles from 1981 to 1986 but the Celtics have since the mid 80’s had some bad luck when it comes to its players and them dying early. Len Bias was the 2nd pick in the 1986 draft but died 2 days later after the draft to a drug overdose. Then in 1993 after the shock retirement of Bird, Reggie Lewis who was All-Star in 1992 was a perfect replacement for Bird, but he pasted away in the off season due to a heart problem.

Most of the 90’s the Celtics didn’t not regain its strong hold as a NBA powerhouse, bad draft after bad draft with players like Eric Montross and Antoine Walker. But in 1997 when the 1st NBA lockout happen and a shorten was the result the Boston went on a tank job trying to lose as many games as they could so they could go into the Tim Duncan sweepstakes. They only won 16 games that season and had the 2nd worst record in the NBA but lost the lottery to the Spurs and that is history. However in 1998 they drafted Paul Pierce and that was the first piece of the puzzle. The 2nd came in 2004 when they hired Doc Rivers to be the head coach.

In 2006 Celtics legend Red Auerbach passed away and the season ended with a record of 24-58 Once again like the 1998 draft they lucked out and only got the 5th pick in the draft! However GM Danny Ainge made a series of moves that returned the Celtics to prominence. On draft night, he traded the No. 5 pick Jeff Green, Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West to Seattle for future hall of famer Ray Allen and Seattle's second-round pick which the team used to select Glen "Big Baby" Davis. Who would go on to help the team, but Danny Ainge had one more major trade to make and that was for former MVP Kevin Garnett. The Celtics traded 7 players for him making it the largest trade ever to happen for one player.

Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce

The team in 2007 with Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett that created the new ‘Big Three’ went on to win 66 games and the top ranking team in the playoffs. Come playoff time the Celtics decided to take the hard road with the taken to 7 games by the Hawks, then again taken to 7 by the LeBron James led Cavs. By the eastern conference finals they played the ageing Pistons and beat them 4-2 to set up a mouth watering matchup in the NBA finals with the Lakers. The Celtics won the NBA title in 6 games with a blow out 39 point win in game 6 to win their first championship since 1986.

2008 NBA Champions!

After the title the Celtics kept the ‘big three’ together until Ray Allen signed with the Miami Heat in 2012, they didn’t win another championship with injury playing a major factor in the seasons after 2008. Only just recently Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett were traded to the Brooklyn Nets for a handful of future draft picks that could bring the Celtics back again but at this moment time they are rebuilding again. With this in mind head coach Doc Rivers was traded to LA Clippers for more future draft picks.
